Parallel Tuesdays

Living the Fantasy Life

First of all, a couple of announcements:

  • The awesome Lara Schiffbauer is posting at the Life List Club blog. Head on over and check it out.
  • Stay tuned. I’ve got an offering for that April-May Writing Challenge at the bottom of this post.
And, now, on with the show…

I’m guest posting today and Nicole Basaraba’s Uni-Verse-City! She’s wrapping up the series on Writing in Different Genres and I’m doing a post on fantasy. I am way beyond thrilled to be part of this series. Please check out the other fantastic writers who contributed.

Living the Fantasy Life by Sonia G Medeiros

I blame my parents for my obsession with love of fantasy. As a child, I had what you might politely call an active imagination. I was often in trouble at school for daydreaming (though, really, I had already finished the work…usually). But did my parents act quickly to contain this? Did they enforce the boundaries of reality and the dangers of  dwelling in imaginary worlds?

Nope.

In fact, fueled by their passion for science fiction/fantasy, they fed my taste for the unreal with a steady diet of A Wrinkle in Time, Narnia, King Arthur, Wonder WomanConan, Lord of the Rings, Edgar Allen Poe, The Twilight Zone and WWF Wrestling (my dad *shrug*). They encouraged me to tell them my odd little tales and allowed me to pretend that I was a warrior princess from a magical world sadly marooned in this one without my powers…

Read the rest here.

As promised, here is my offering for the April-May Writing Challenge – First Impressions and Famous Last Words:

Hell on earth started, just as I knew it always would, with a parade.

*It is an opening line. Thanks to those of you who alerted me that I’d forgotten to say. LOL*

So tell me, what is your favorite first or last line of a movie or story?

In other news, I forgot to mention on my last ROW80 check-in that I would only be checking in every other week or so. But I will be visiting some ROW80 buds. Hope your week is going smashingly.

  1. Love your first / last line. This will eventually be a book, right? Or maybe it already is? 🙂

The first line from Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye” grabbed me by my shoulders and sat me down. I still remember the moment of reading that first line, and knowing the book would be important to me. A gut feeling. Salinger was talking to *me*. And the rest of the book was the same way. (I had to look it up of course, I don’t remember sentences, just impressions.)

“If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.” -J. D. Salinger

  2. First of all, I love your opening line (it is opening, right? Seems that way to me).

Second, my favorite opening line(s) come from N.D. Wilson’s 100 Cupboards series. This one is from the prelude to The Chestnut King (the last book in the trilogy) –

“In a world tangled in places with this one, both near and far from where we stand, near and far from where our grandfathers are standing as children, near and far from our past, from our now, from our never, there are two seas separated only by a long and strong belt of land.”

    1. Thanks! Yes, it is an opening…I guess I forgot to say so *blush*

Very intriguing opening line from 100 Cupboards. Going to have to check out the series now. I love the idea of parallel worlds or worlds tied together. That idea is what inspired one of my flash fic pieces (Paper Airplanes).

      1. If you find the time, you should! They’re one of my favorite fantasy series. They’re really imaginative, occasionally side-splitting funny, and always incredible rich and descriptive. Wilson’s a master.
