Why You’ll Never Have to Worry About a Zombie Apocalypse

…or Will You?

Have you been super duper stressed about the possibility of  a zombie apocalypse? Or maybe you don’t really believe but you watched one too many episodes of The Walking Dead and now you can’t sleep until you can shoot a squirrel off the shoulder of an undead pizza delivery guy. Well, rest assured that a zombie apocalypse is totally nothing to worry about.  Cracked.com offers 7 Scientific Reasons a Zombie Outbreak Would Fail (Quickly).

What’s on Your Fall Watch List?

Fall is (finally) here.

Around here, it felt like fall would never get here. In fact, it’s still in the low 80s. *grumble grumble*

But anyway.

The best thing fall is…the new tv shows.

Okay, maybe it’s a toss-up between the new shows and Thanksgiving dinner.  But, while Turkey Day only lasts until all the leftovers run out (or you get sick of them), there are at least a few shows to keep your mental belly full all season long.

Here’s what’s on my list:

The Blacklist

James Spader strikes a Hannibal Lecteresque pose with his own fascinating twist and everyone has a secret agenda. Good stuff so far.

_______

Sleepy Hollow

Apocalypse. American history. Mythology. A classic American scary story and an anachronistic hero. What isn’t there to love?

_______

The Walking Dead

This is one of those shows I hate to love. It just gets more and more intense every season and there’s no guarantee your most loved characters will survive (or stay sane).

_______

And one that’s premiering Friday:

Dracula

Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Oh my. It has to be good.

I see all the shows on my list are pretty dark. Apparently, I have to branch out a little. Guess I better go research some comedies.

Right after I watch the last episode of The Walking Dead again.

What’s on your watch list this fall?

Pick Your Apocalypse

Abandoned City, ApocalypticThe end is nigh.

Or maybe it’s not. I mean, what is “nigh” anyway? Is it tomorrow? Next week? A billion years from now?

Anyway, we all know the world will end. Someday. The only question is how and when.

But the “when” is not really important for the purposes of this post. Just the “how.”

So, how will the the world end?

That’s up to you. Continue reading “Pick Your Apocalypse”

Has Horror Lost its Mojo?

Recently, I read an article by Cindy Zablockis asking “what ever happened to horror movies that actually scared [us]?”

I recently watched the latest version of Final Destination, not sure what number, I lost count. Within fifteen minutes I was bored. Nothing in the movie actually scared me or even had me on the edge of my seat. I haven’t felt that heart racing, eyes open wide as I wonder what will happen next for a long time while watching a movie.

Read the rest here.

An excellent question, really.

I can’t recall the last, recent horror movie that really scared me. Grossed me out, sure. Made me uncomfortable for all the wrong reasons, yep. But scared me? Left me having to sleep with the lights on? Nightmares?

Well maybe…no. Or…nope. Not that one either. Hmmm…. Continue reading “Has Horror Lost its Mojo?”

What Does Your SmartPhone Say About You?

Have you ever noticed that, when you send or receive email from a smartphone or tablet, you get a little advertising in the signature. “Sent from my brand-spanking new iPhone 5600 with 3D Laser Mind Control. You know you’re jealous,” or something like that.

Okay, okay…it’s actually a little more boring than that. But don’t you wish it was a little more fun?

Instead of  advertising for you (or maybe you like that, you braggart you), your phone or tablet could highlight your insanity creativity. Continue reading “What Does Your SmartPhone Say About You?”

Final ROW80 Check in for Round 2, 2012

yawning kitty cat
Having reached the end of another ROW80, Mortimer decides to take a well-deserved nap.

We’ve reached the end of another round of ROW80. This round, I haven’t been as attentive as I would have liked. Of course, lots of life intervened. But all we can do is all we can do.

My plans for this round:

  • Update ROW80 page, for last round and this one: I updated the page at the beginning of the round but it needs another update.
  • Spend 15-30 minutes minimum 4 days a week on new novella. I’m working on expanding Postcards from Hell and its sequel, Ants in the Mailbox into a novella. My MIP is on hold for now: For the last month, I’ve tried to catch up with work projects and a big move. I put a hold on writing work until I get settled. Continue reading “Night of the Living ROW”

Ants in the Mailbox – Postcards from Hell, Part 2 (a 500-word story)

My friend, the lovely historical fiction writer Haley Whitehall, issued a flash fiction challenge in the horror genre and this time it involves a prize! The contest runs until 10/31/11, so there’s still time to enter. My entry is Part 2 of a story I wrote for BeKindRewrite’s Inspiration Monday IX. You can find Part 1, Postcards from Hell here.

And now…

Ants in the Mailbox

US Mail
They stood at the edge of the front lawn gone almost knee-high with weeds. The figure in the filthy postal uniform lay still on sidewalk.

Steve looked right. Left. Nothing else moved anywhere on the street.

Deanna squeezed the stock of her crossbow. “He really dead? Dead-dead?” Continue reading “Ants in the Mailbox – Postcards from Hell, Part 2 (a 500-word story)”
