Ah, February. What’s not to love about it?
The end of winter’s in sight.
Shadow schmadow. I’m going inside to watch Meerkat Manor on Netflix.
There’s that whole Valentine’s Day thing.
I got you a nice box of chocolate covered mice…they were delicious.
Even if you don’t love Valentine’s Day, with all the commercialization and potential for smarminess, there’s all that chocolate on sale right after. So…yum.
And, once every four years, people born on February 29th get to celebrate their birthdays. For reals.
No way! I can’t believe you guys got me an iPad!
Then, best of all, we have the February Writing Challenge! This month’s challenge is to write a 250-word story containing any five words from the prompt list below. The five words can be used in any fashion within the story but they must included somehow. Once you’ve written your story, you’re also invited to add another word to the prompt list.
This month’s challenge also has a theme. Two themes: Love and Leap Years. You can use either or both and any genre goes.
Here’s how it all works:
- Prompt: Select any five words from the prompt list below and write a story containing them. The words can be used in any way you choose but they must be included somehow. Then contribute a word of your choice to the list for the next participants to use.
- Theme: Love and Leap Years. You can choose either or both.
- Genre: Anything goes. Mystery, Western, romance, historical fiction, alternate history, steam punk, science fiction, horror, fantasy, slip-stream, or whatever.
- Word count: 250 words.
- How to share: You can put it up on your blog and link here or (if you don’t have a blog) you can email it to me and I’ll put it in a post for you.
- Time limit: From now until the next challenge is posted.
- Prizes: No…no prizes. Just the reward of a story well written.
The prompt list (will grow as participants add new words):
- variance
- reign
- cough
- escaped
- civil
- paradigm
- underwater
- disorderly
- implant
- tote
- quip
- idiosyncratic
- quintessential
- tortoise
- arrangement
*Original prompt list complements of WatchOut4Snakes.com’s Random Word Generator.
*List updated 2/20/12*
Happy writing!

I thought about waiting until a few more words were added, but then instead I set fingers to keys and came up with this.

Thanks for the challenge.
Oh, and my word will be “quip.”
My best Christmas event happens every February.Last year, gift giving to the poor on my birthday. This year…missionary work for the abused children and prostituted women in the poorest of the poor area in the Philippines.I’ll probably have 1001 words to write but it will be my heart and soul who will do the talking.
@Craig: Thanks! You can always do another story later.
@Julie: Sounds so lovely! Can’t wait to read your story.
I just wrapped up my entry this morning. Here’s the link:

I haven’t done a writing challenge in so long! I should find time to write a 250 word story
I hear ya. When you’re hard at work with a WIP, it can be tough to find the creative flow for a short project. I’ve been feeling that with my MIP. It’s fun to take a break and try a small challenge though. Can’t wait to read your story!
I’ve written something; I believe it resembles a story.
(It’s quite a challenge Sonia; I loved the gymnastics it’s given my brain cells.) The pingback will hopefully find you this Monday/Tuesday (yep perfect timing for Valentine’s Day). The Story is: Fated to Love a Recycled War-Hero.
I’ll submit my word from now it’s: ‘quintessential‘.
Alright! Thanks, Ozlem. I’ll go check it out.
