January Writing Challenge: Fifty on One

The old year is safely tucked away and the new one is upon us. Let us celebrate with a new writing challenge! But perhaps not too strenuous a challenge as we’re still recovering from the holidays. This month’s challenge is to write a fifty word story using a one-word prompt and then to contribute a word to the prompt list.

How it all works:

  • Prompt: Select any word from the prompt list below and write a story containing it. Then contribute a word of your choice to the list for the next participants to use.
  • Genre: Anything goes. Mystery, romance, historical fiction, alternate history, steam punk, science fiction, horror, fantasy, slip-stream, or whatever.
  • Word count: 50 words. The number of words thou writest shalt be 50 and 50 shalt be the number that thou writest. Write not 51 words nor 49 words, except that thou continuest on to 50 words. (Titles not included in the word count.)
  • How to share: You can put it up on your blog and link here or (if you don’t have a blog) you can email it to me and I’ll put it in a post for you.
  • Time limit: From now until the next challenge is posted.
  • Prizes: No…no prizes. Just the reward of a story well written.

The prompt list (will grow as participants contribute new words):

  • disintegration
  • quotidian
  • collection
  • Mollycoddle
  • forgetful
  • Euclidean
  • rhubarb
  • hokey
  • betide
  • luscious
  • magnetism
  • precocious
  • wasp
  • devoid
  • athanasia
  • transom
*prompt list updated 1/29/12*

Happy writing!!!
